In light of the ongoing situation in Iran, Canada has developed specific immigration policies to assist Iranian nationals, whether they are temporary residents in Canada or Canadian citizens and permanent residents residing in Iran.
The situation in Iran remains complex and uncertain. Since September 2022, the Canadian government has indicated a willingness to support the Iranian people, particularly following the protests triggered by the tragic death of Mahsa Amini. Although the intensity of protests may have waned, the underlying instability persists.
The latest announcement, made by the Hon. Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, extends the measures implemented on October 7, 2022 until February 28, 2025.
For Iranian nationals currently residing in Canada under temporary status, navigating immigration procedures can be daunting. Canada is facilitating extensions of current temporary resident status, changing status (such as transitioning from visitor to worker), and obtaining additional permits like open work or study permits. These measures alleviate financial burdens and facilitate smoother transitions for individuals whose lives are already in flux due to the situation in Iran. Canada is also waiving application and biometric fees for various processes.
Canadian citizens and permanent residents living in Iran also benefit from these extended measures. They are eligible to apply for essential documents free of charge, including limited validity Canadian passports, Canadian citizenship certificates, and permanent resident travel documents. This ensures that they have access to necessary documentation without financial constraints, facilitating their mobility and access to services both within and outside of Iran.
For those affected by these temporary measures, it’s essential to understand how to navigate the application process effectively. We strongly encourage applicants to contact us at @[email protected].
