The Seventh Day of BLOGMAS: Seven Common Myths About Express Entry

Clarifying CRS scores, draw types, French points, and eligibility misconceptions

On the seventh day of Immigration Law, IRCC gave to me… seven myths about Express Entry! 🎄✨
As one of Canada’s most well-known immigration systems, Express Entry attracts thousands of hopeful applicants every year – but it is also surrounded by confusion, outdated advice, and internet myths that can derail an application long before it’s even submitted.

Today’s Blogmas post breaks down seven of the most common myths about Express Entry, helping applicants understand what actually matters in 2026 and how to position themselves for success.

1️⃣ Myth: “You need a CRS score above 500 to get invited.”

Not true.

While recent all-program draws have hovered near or above 500, category-based draws have significantly lower cut-offs, often in the 420-480 range depending on the category. For example:

  • French-language proficiency draws
  • Healthcare occupation draws
  • Trades draws
  • Transport and STEM categories

A strong, targeted profile can succeed even without a 500+ score.

🎁 Blogmas Tip: Improving your French (even by a single CLB level) often yields one of the largest CRS boosts.

2️⃣ Myth: “If I qualify for Express Entry, I will automatically get an ITA.”

Express Entry is competitive, not entitlement-based.

Meeting the eligibility criteria only allows you to enter the pool. Receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) depends on:

  • CRS score
  • Category targeting
  • Levels Plan admissions
  • Provincial needs
  • Draw frequency

🎄 Eligibility ≠ guaranteed invitation.

3️⃣ Myth: “A job offer is required to immigrate through Express Entry.”

False.

Less than 10% of all Express Entry applicants have arranged employment. A job offer can increase your CRS score (50-200 points), but it is not required.

Most successful applicants qualify through:

  • Language proficiency
  • Education
  • Work experience
  • French points
  • Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nominations

🎁 A PNP nomination gives you 600 CRS points, guaranteeing an invitation.

4️⃣ Myth: “Express Entry is only for people with Canadian experience.”

Many people immigrate through Express Entry without ever having worked or studied in Canada.

Two main programs accept foreign work experience:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)

International experience is recognized – provided:

  • It is skilled work (TEER 0-3)
  • You were paid
  • You worked at least 30 hours per week (or equivalent)

🎄 Canadian experience helps, but it is not mandatory.

5️⃣ Myth: “Express Entry is first come, first served.”

Express Entry does not process applicants in the order they join the pool.

IRCC invites candidates based on:

  • CRS points
  • Category selection
  • Provincial nominations
  • Program-specific draws

Someone who enters the pool tomorrow with a strong profile could be invited before someone who has been waiting months.

🎁 Quality > timing.

6️⃣ Myth: “If my CRS score goes up, IRCC will automatically update my profile.”

Profiles must be manually updated.

IRCC does not adjust:

  • New work experience
  • Updated language test results
  • Additional education
  • Marital status changes
  • New job offers

Failing to update your profile can result in:

  • Lost points
  • Ineligibility
  • Refusal for misrepresentation

🎄 Refresh your profile every time your circumstances improve.

7️⃣ Myth: “Express Entry is the only way to immigrate to Canada.”

Not even close!

Express Entry is just one pathway. Many applicants qualify through:

  • Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
  • Family sponsorship
  • Caregiver programs
  • Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot
  • Agri-Food Pilot
  • Quebec programs
  • Start-up Visa
  • Employer-driven LMIA pathways

🎁 The best pathway depends on your background, not the popularity of the program.

Final Thoughts

Express Entry remains one of Canada’s most dynamic and opportunity-rich immigration pathways – but only if applicants understand how it actually works. On this seventh day of Blogmas, we hope this myth-busting guide helps applicants avoid misinformation and approach their 2026 plans with clarity and confidence.
