How to Travel Smoothly Over Thanksgiving Weekend: Tips from CBSA & Beyond

Thanksgiving weekend is a popular time for travel, whether you’re visiting family, crossing the border, or taking a short getaway. The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) warns that border crossings tend to be especially busy during long weekends, which can lead to delays and stress.

If you’re planning to travel this Thanksgiving, here are practical tips to make your trip smoother and avoid surprises:

Check Border Wait Times & Choose Off-Peak Hours

Use CBSA’s website to monitor real-time wait times at land crossings. Try to cross early in the morning, before lines build up. CBSA notes that the Monday of a long weekend often sees the highest traffic. Also consider alternative ports of entry with lighter congestion.

Keep Your Travel Documents Ready

Having your passport, visa, or other required documents accessible can help speed up processing. If travelling with children who share custody or where parental consent is needed, carrying a consent letter is strongly recommended.

Declare Everything & Know Restrictions

When entering Canada, you must declare all items you have with you – including goods in your vehicle if you’re travelling by land. Be especially cautious about bringing poultry products (such as turkey) or homemade food, which often face stricter rules. Also check rules around restricted or prohibited goods like fireworks, medications, and firewood.

Travel with Pets & Cross-Border Animal Rules

If you have pets, make sure you understand the import rules and documentation required. If crossing to the U.S. with a dog, new documentation requirements may apply.

Flying? Use Advance Declaration

If you’re flying into Canada, consider using the Advance Declaration feature. This tool lets you make your customs and immigration declaration up to 72 hours before arrival, which can speed up processing.

Final Thoughts

Thanksgiving travel can be rewarding – a chance to see loved ones or take a relaxing break. But being unprepared can lead to frustrating delays at the border. Use the CBSA’s tools, travel outside peak times, and make sure your documentation is in order. Above all, allow extra buffer time and stay informed.
