Quebec Suspends Sponsorship Applications for Spouses and Adult Children Until June 2026 — A Troubling Move for Families

The Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI) has announced that it has reached the maximum number of undertaking applications it will receive between June 26, 2024, and June 25, 2026 for the sponsorship of:

  • Spouses
  • Common-law spouses
  • Conjugal partners
  • Dependent children aged 18 or over

As a result, no new applications for these family members will be accepted until at least June 25, 2026. Any such applications submitted now will be returned without being processed, and application fees will not be deposited.

This decision has deep personal and emotional implications. At Jain Immigration Law, we believe it is unfair to keep romantic partners apart for years due to an arbitrary application cap. Family reunification is a foundational principle of Canada’s immigration system, and this policy undermines the very commitment to keeping loved ones together.

Individuals whose applications were returned will only be able to apply again when a new intake period opens, expected to be announced by June 25, 2026.

MIFI is continuing to accept undertaking applications for other family members, but for many Quebec residents hoping to reunite with a spouse or adult child, this news comes as a significant setback.

If you or a loved one is affected by this change, or if you would like assistance with other sponsorship categories, our experienced immigration lawyers at Jain Immigration Law are here to help.
