Thinking about studying in Canada? Here are the key things international students need to keep in mind when applying for a study permit and planning their education journey.
Getting Started
- Apply through the Canada Study Permit Portal.
- Make sure you have:
- Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- Proof of funds for tuition + living expenses
- Passport and required identification
- Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (if required)
Key 2025 Updates
- Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Eligibility
- Only certain programs qualify based on field of study (CIP codes).
- Check if your program is on the eligible list.
- Changing Schools or Programs
- As of November 8, 2024, you must apply for a new study permit (not just update IRCC) if transferring schools.
- Be sure to maintain valid status while switching.
Work Options
- Many students can work up to 20 hours/week during studies and full-time during scheduled breaks.
- Work options after graduation depend on PGWP eligibility.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting to include a valid attestation letter
- Assuming all programs are PGWP-eligible
- Not applying for a new study permit when switching schools
