Teaching Your Way to Canada: A New Path for Educators Through Express Entry

If you’ve worked as a teacher or teacher assistant and dream of building a new life in Canada, there’s encouraging news: the Canadian government is now prioritizing education professionals in its Express Entry immigration system. This change recognizes the essential role that educators play in building strong communities and supporting the next generation of Canadians.

Why Teachers and Their Support Staff Are in Demand

Canada’s classrooms are becoming increasingly diverse, both culturally and in terms of learning needs. Teacher assistants (also called educational assistants or paraprofessionals) help bridge that gap by providing crucial one-on-one support to students, often assisting children with disabilities, behavioural challenges, or language barriers.

In many parts of the country, especially smaller cities and rural communities, there simply aren’t enough qualified teacher assistants available. This shortage isn’t just a staffing issue; it affects classroom environments, teacher workload, and student outcomes. By opening the door to experienced international education professionals, the government is acknowledging both the immediate need and the long-term value of investing in support for public education.

A New Express Entry Stream for Educators

In 2025, IRCC launched a new category-based selection stream within Express Entry specifically for Education Occupations. This means that candidates with recent experience as teachers or teacher assistants (NOC 43100) may receive targeted Invitations to Apply (ITAs) even if their CRS score is lower than general draw thresholds. This is a meaningful shift that could make permanent residency more accessible for many qualified applicants.

To be eligible for this stream, you’ll need at least six months of full-time, continuous work experience in a relevant educational support role within the last three years. While specific requirements can vary depending on the program and your personal background, the key takeaway is this: Canada is actively looking to attract professionals like you.

More Than a Job—It’s a Contribution to Canadian Society

For many internationally trained educators, the move to Canada isn’t just about career advancement. It’s about contributing to a system that values inclusion, student well-being, and equitable access to education. Whether working with children with autism, supporting literacy programs, or helping multilingual students find their voice, teacher assistants are central to the Canadian learning experience.

Educators who come to Canada through these pathways often find deep purpose in their work, along with opportunities for professional development and community involvement. And with permanent residence, they can build a secure future for themselves and their families.
