Navigating Immigration Interviews in Canada: Dos and Don’ts

The immigration process can be complex, and interviews play a crucial role in determining your eligibility to enter or remain in Canada. Whether you’re arriving as a new immigrant, renewing your status, or facing an admissibility review, understanding the interview process is essential.

Interviews at the Port of Entry:

  • Expect two interviews:
    • The first interview focuses on your official documents, including visas, passports, and travel documents. You’ll be asked general questions about your health, travel history, and the purpose of your visit.
    • The second interview focuses on the items you’re bringing into Canada. Declare all goods accurately and be prepared to answer questions about them, including any live animals, plants, firearms, ammunition, food items, and items from endangered species.
  • Be truthful and cooperative: Providing false information is a serious offense and can result in your refusal of entry.
  • Prepare your documents: Ensure all necessary documents are readily available for inspection.

Interviews Conducted by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA):

  • Understand the reasons for the interview: Interviews may be conducted for various reasons, including pre-removal risk assessments, admissibility reviews, or to address concerns about your immigration status.
  • Be prepared to provide documentation: Bring any requested documents, such as passports, birth certificates, and any other relevant documents.
  • Answer questions truthfully and honestly: Providing accurate information is crucial throughout the interview process.

Interviews Conducted by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):

  • Understand the purpose of the interview: Interviews are often conducted for spousal sponsorship applications but can be required for other applications as well.
  • Be prepared to answer questions about your application: Expect questions related to your personal background, family history, and the specific reasons for your immigration application.
  • Be honest and forthcoming: Provide truthful and accurate answers to all questions.
